One of the things you forget with a building this old is just how many people will have, at some point, used the fireplace and sat around it trying to keep warm during one of its many and varied uses.

Apparently at some point it was a schoolhouse before it was used a church hall and although it’s not clear when the fireplace was last used in anger, what is clear is it’s in need of a good sweep. Adam’s little face shouting “echo” into the chimney for the fiftieth time was enough for him to come out looking like a Victorian street urchin, filthy but thoroughly pleased with himself.
